Jakrias

Overview:

Personality:
Jakrias have a reputation for being stubborn and somewhat overbearing. They are renowned for their grim determination, when they set out to accomplish something they will not rest until they are either dead, or their goals are met. They are also known for their territorial nature, they have a strong dislike of any that trespass upon their established territory. However, they will not go out of their way to cause any harm to such trespassers, unless they are harmed first, or said trespassers attempt to settle upon the Jakrias land.
Jakrias enjoy the thrill of the hunt, and revel in torturing their unsuspecting prey and luring them into a trap all the while remaining out of sight, hidden from view of those they hunt until the final blow is to be struck. They are sometimes regarded as malicious and sadistic in their methods, but in truth they respect their prey, killing them as swiftly and mercifully as possible, with minimal physical pain caused before the death itself, mental trauma…is another story.

Physical Description:
The most notable feature of the Jakrias are their long arms, brush up against the ground at their feet and often drag as they walk. Jakrias are slightly taller than your average gnome. They average just over three feet tall and weigh around 30 pounds. The females of the race tend to be slightly taller and slimmer than the males.
The arms of a Jakrias end in short, slender claws, although they are not particularly sharp and lack any use in combat. Jakrias lack any sign of hair on their body, and rather than the soft, pink flesh of other races, Jakrias possess are hardened outer shell of greenish brown scales. Jakrias' faces are also distinct, their eyes are slender and silted, similar to those of a snake, and they lack any form of nose and instead use their forked tongues to smell.
Jakrias clothing tends to be somewhat streamlined and utilitarian. Any clothing that is too heavy, too restrictive, or too loose has the potential to mess with their tracking abilities, alerting their targets of their presence.

Relations:
Strangers who run into Jakrias usually receive the cold shoulder, as Jakrias tend to dislike those who have not earned their respect and admiration. To a Jakrias, any unfamiliar creature is a threat until proven otherwise, Jakrias are sure to keep out of sight until they have gained a better understanding of any stranger. Other creatures often consider them to be cruel and cold hearted, but once they have earned their trust and respect they find that a Jakrias can be among the most valuable of allies.
Jakrias are fiercely territorial, defending lands they claim to be their own with their lives, they are unlikely to threaten those who simply pass by, and it is not unheard of for a Jakrias village to provide shelter for such travelers, however, should anyone try to establish a permanent home on the lands claimed by the Jakrias, they will be either scared off, or killed.
Jakrias, as stated, are generous to those who are simply visiting, and are known to offer shelter and other services, provided they receive something in return. They often barter with the other beings of the forest, offering up game, furs, various herbs and other products for metals, goods, cloth, and other minerals.
Alignment: Jakrias enjoy their freedom in the forests, yet they are strict enforcers of their codes and laws. They have no tendency towards the lawful or chaotic alignments.
Likewise, Jakrias favor neither good nor evil. All ends of the spectrum can be found among the territorial race. Some Jakrias go overboard on their hunting, turning to more…sinister methods, while others show great respect for the lives of others, only hunting and killing when required.

Jakrias Lands:
A typical Jakrias community lives high atop the jungle trees in huts built around the trunks of the trees. The higher up in the trees the better, as Jakrias prefer to remain hidden and out of sight until they choose to reveal themselves.
Jakrias refrain from any form of agriculture, instead they take what they need from the land, harvesting various fruits from the trees around them, and hunting the animals of the jungle. Jakrias are typically far removed from other races, keeping to areas where fruit and game are plentiful.

Language:
The Jakrias speak a sharp, yet somewhat enchanting tongue that they call Grakssaa. Despite being derived from the ancient tongues of the dragons the language is distinct in its development. Grakssaa has many short drawn out words accompanied with simple grammar, relying on the tone to convey most of its meaning. Written Grakssaa uses a form of writing similar to Dragonic.

Names:
Jakrias rarely use more than one name, although they are given three, sometimes more. The first of their names is given to them by their village elder upon birth, this is the name they go by for much of their lives, their second name is passed down through their families, and their final name is earned after they have come of age and proven themselves worthy of the hunt, it is this final name that nearly all Jakrias refer to themselves by, although some use their birth name.
